Back in early November of 2019, Emily, my mother-in-law, and I visited my family in Indonesia.
For those that do not know yet, I was born and raised in Indonesia. I moved to the United States when I was 12 and all of my family (parents, siblings, cousins, aunts, and uncles, everybody) is in Indonesia.
Emily and I try to go back to Indonesia once a year to visit with my family. Usually, we’d include some adventures along the way (i.e. Tumpak Sewu, Mt. Bromo, Bali, etc.), but this time, we were just focused on hanging out with my family in Jakarta during the entire 3 weeks there. We did end up doing some local weekend adventures around West Java however and it was too much fun.

Emily, Joseph, and I spent a week in Glacier National Park to hike, camp, and just to run wild around the park. This was the week after Labor Day weekend so there were not a lot of people around. We spent a total of 6 days and 5 nights in the park.
We mostly stayed at a free campsite outside of the park or for cheap on the Native Americans’ land overlooking one of the most beautiful views this park has to offer (be sure to purchase the Native American Land permit if you are planning to do this as well.) We hiked, swam, and hiked some more. Rarely slept. It was the best time.

a coast to coast road trip - pt. iii - south dakota
We were going to take our sweet time driving across the country and planned to do a lot of sightseeing each day. But this whole trip ended up taking about 3-4 days (not counting the extra 3 days in Maine)…

The days are long when you wake up at 4:30 am and start driving at 5:00 am until 10 - 11 pm. Or in some cases, like this last day, we drove until 1:30 am.
We were going to take our sweet time driving across the country and planned to do a lot of sightseeing each day. But this whole trip ended up taking about 3-4 days (not counting the extra 3 days in Maine).
So for this last day, we started in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in hopes to drive through the Badlands National Park and make it to Spokane, Washington later that night where Colin was going to drop me off before continuing his journey home alone to Portland, Oregon.

Colin and I left Maine and Rhode Island eventually to make our way West all the way across the country.
I did not photograph the first full day of driving, well because we did a full day of driving and not much sightseeing. We made it a few hours past Cleveland, Ohio and stopped and stayed at a La Quinta for the night. I did remember we went to a subpar Chinese restaurant in the middle of nowhere Ohio.
So then the second day, we got an early start so we can spend our late morning and early afternoon in Chicago. This was my first time in Chicago and it was Colin’s second time. We walked around for a good hour or so and did as much sightseeing as we can in that one hour. We ended our time in Chicago meeting up with an old friend of mine, Kyle, for lunch at Au Cheval. Apparently this place was supposed to be the best burger in the U.S., but I thought it was good not certainly the best I’ve ever had though.
Then we kept on driving for the next 8-10 hours onward to Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

a coast to coast road trip - pt. i - maine

My friend Colin graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in the summer of 2019. He called me up and asked if I wanted to help him move back to his home in Portland after he graduates. Without hesitation, I accepted and booked my flight to the East Coast.
Just before Colin and I were about to begin our coast to coast road trip, we had to make a few stops in Maine for a few days before making our way West. For both Colin and I, Acadia National Park has always been on top of our National Park list to visit. So we made a few arrangements to stay at this beautiful rustic cabin in the middle of nowhere Maine, and there we went.
